Understanding a public SPSN record

A public SPSN page shows the number and its status first, followed by the publication details.

In this section

The number and its status

The top of the page shows the complete SPSN, whether it is active or withdrawn, and the date it was issued. These are the main details to check when verifying a number.

The publication details

The page can show the title, description, type, format, language, edition, publication date, series, collection, publisher, contributors and other publishing numbers. A source link may open the publication’s own page.

What the page confirms

The page confirms that the SPSN was issued to the publication shown. It does not prove copyright, confirm every claim, judge quality or guarantee that another organisation will accept the number.

What remains private

The publication details on an active page are public and may appear in search engines, libraries and catalogues. Contact details, payments, private messages and evidence used during review are not shown.
